![]() Have you ever sat on a bench at a mall and watched someone go about their day, and imagine what their life is like? It's the same kind of thingĭF is a game where 95% of the good stuff is in your imagination. You can see anything from new romance and bar fights to necromancers raising the dog your butcher was in the middle of butchering. Set up a tavern and or library to attract foreign visitors and watch the area for a while. Maybe pick a couple favorite dwarves and follow them around for a while. Look for specific keywords, or follow the colour coding to find rarer events. You can also search and skim legends mode pretty easily. Go to the map and go to rumors to see wars, stolen artifacts, spys, etc. On a larger scale, traders bring information about goings on in the world. Look at the combat logs, dwarf thoughts, personalities, relationships, and preferences and you will learn a lot. There are a few places you can go to get these details There's a lot going on under the hood and it doesn't take a ton of imagination if you're paying close attention. If you start to read all these things you'll quickly find an interesting story. You can hover over sites to see info, view info on Civilizations, view News and Rumors, create Missions and read mission Reports. The world map (little icon bottom right) is kind of a mini-legends mode in fort mode. From things like rumors being passed around, births of dwarves and livestock, arrival of visitors, etc. Other announcements have some bits of "story". There's subtabs for those and there's a tremendous amount of information surfaced through this interface for every dwarf. Use the tabs to view their relations, thoughts, memories, personality, skills and health in detail. When a dwarf is selected you see the overview by default. These logs are VERY detailed and leave little to the imagination. I rarely dismiss it, unless I've actually read through it and want to see new combat easily. Combat shows up as an announcement on the left. Sounds like you just don't know where the information is in the game. Just experiment with a lot of different play styles until you find the one you enjoy the most. You can pay attention to details, watch the dwarfs, try to understand what's going on. That's how slowly I play :-) It's really up to your own style. I've been playing it for a good 20 hours. My current fortress is just over 1 year in. If it makes the story better, then it's fine if you are wrong :-) You might not know 100%, but it's fine to guess. You see someone do something and you have to figure out why they are doing it. As other people say, you have to use your imagination to fill in the blanks. Then I'll try to look things up in legends mode to see if I can find an entertaining story around it.īut mostly it's just watching what's happening. You can get a brief description of the story from the citizens menu (click on the magnifying glass next to the task). Often I'll notice that they are telling a story in the tavern. You can spend hours there and for some people (myself included) it's quite fun. ![]() I do also keep a copy of the save for legends mode and I look at it from time to time. When the dwarfs are warping all over the screen it's impossible to see what's going on. Usually I turn the FPS display on in the settings and then you can use ALT-= and ALT- to speed up and slow down the game. One big trick is that you can change the speed of the game. ![]() It makes the game a lot more enjoyable to me (: I put that statue in her room because I thought it was hilarious…days later she threw a tantrum and died.Īt no point was any of this explicitly stated - I only knew what was happening because I was taking it slow and paying attention to an outlier. Later, I ordered my smiths to make platinum statues out of historical figures and one of them made a statue of her crying after being removed from the military. I kicked her out of the squad because she sucked at fighting. I decided to put her in my military so maybe she’d die or come to terms with her existence or something. I gave her the best bedroom in the fort, complete with a platinum statue of a crossbow, which she loved. I had a dwarf that was super angry all the time. I like to pay attention to outliers or people in unique positions - most of my anecdotes and stories stem from that. Speaking for myself, I spend lots of time with the game paused during fortress mode.
